The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) recently released its Better Management Report, highlighting the need for managers to receive formal training in the private sector. The report reveals a startling statistic: 82% of people moving into leadership roles have not received relevant training. With ineffective management hindering many businesses across the UK, it’s clear that the lack of training is a major cause for concern.
Accidental Managers
In the report, CMI refers to leaders with a lack of training as “accidental managers”. This is because many of these individuals have moved into these roles for reasons other than being the right candidate for the job. This could include individuals who receive a promotion because they are good at their current job, they are popular, or they happen to be available for the role.
Often, these accidental managers move into their new roles without having any formal training to prepare them. The process of learning to manage people and businesses effectively is very much overlooked. This lack of preparation not only affects the manager, but also their employees and ultimately the organisation’s performance.
The Impact of Trained Managers
For a business to succeed it needs to employ capable managers that have some formal training within leadership and management specifically. The Better Management Report found that trained managers significantly outperform untrained managers on key leadership metrics:
- Leading change
- Seeking opportunities for continuous improvement
- Trust in line reports
- Calling out bad behaviour
- Employing emerging technology
- Asking for feedback and developing
- Focus on sustainability
Employee Perceptions of Ineffective Managers
As well as underperforming, ineffective managers who lack relevant training have a detrimental impact on their employees’ perceptions.
In the report, employees who rated their managers effective and ineffective were both asked a series of questions relating to their jobs. The percentages below represent the amount of people who agree with each statement.
- 15% with ineffective and 72% with effective managers agreed – “I feel valued and appreciated”
- 34% with ineffective and 77% with effective managers agreed – “I feel motivated to do a good job”
- 27% with ineffective and 74% with effective managers agreed – “I am satisfied with my current job”
- 47% with ineffective and 74% with effective managers agreed – “I find my work meaningful”
- 21% with ineffective and 68% with effective managers agreed – “I would recommend my organisation as a good place to work”
With only 27% of people with ineffective managers having job satisfaction, and only47% of the same group finding their work meaningful, it’s clear that ineffective managers have a significant negative impact on employee morale, engagement, and overall job satisfaction. This will ultimately hinder both individual and organisational performance.
These staggering statistics are a reminder that training managers in the skill of management is not only beneficial, but essential for organisational success.
