The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has made a big change to its Chartered pathway. Previously, achieving Chartered Manager status required a separate, often lengthy application process. Now, that’s changing for the better.

You can now apply for Chartered Manager status at the same time as enrolling onto an eligible CMI qualification. When your application has been reviewed and accepted, you’ll be guaranteed Chartered status upon successful completion of your course.

This means that by completing your CMI-accredited course, you won’t just earn a respected qualification, you’ll also achieve the Chartered Manager title, the ultimate recognition for managers.

What is Chartered Manager Status?

Supported by a Royal Charter, Chartered Manager is the highest status that can be achieved in the management profession. This prestigious recognition demonstrates your outstanding leadership and management capabilities, along with a strong commitment to professional development.

Why Become a Chartered Manager?

Becoming a Chartered Manager is one of the best steps you can take to grow your management career. This status is a clear sign that you have the skills, confidence, and capabilities to lead successfully.

It’s more than just a title, as it shows employers and colleagues that you know how to lead teams and manage change to drive real results. It helps you stand out, builds your credibility, and gives you a strong advantage in the job market.

It’s also worth considering the financial benefits this status brings. On average, professionals who become Chartered Managers see a £13,000 increase in salary. They also help boost their business’s revenue by £59,000 every year, which highlights how valuable they really are.

It’s not just about money, either. 90% of Chartered Managers say it has increased their self-confidence and self-awareness, while 91% feel more confident in their management skills overall. It’s a great way to grow personally as well as professionally.

As a Chartered Manager, you’ll also gain exclusive access to thousands of CMI’s online tools, resources, and learning materials—supporting your ongoing development and advancing your career at every stage.

Who Can Apply For Chartered Manager Status?

Chartered Manager status is ideal for operational or strategic managers with a minimum of three years’ experience. It’s designed for professionals who want to formally recognise their existing skills and achievements, while continuing to develop and enhance their leadership and management capabilities.

To be eligible for the Chartered Manager application with your course enrolment,  you must enrol onto one of the following qualifications:

You must also have a minimum of 3 years of management experience at a middle management or senior management level. Without this, your application will not be approved.

When deciding between Level 5 and Level 7, your choice will largely depend on your current level of experience and your career goals. Once you’ve selected the appropriate level, you’ll also need to choose between a Diploma and an Extended Diploma.

Diploma vs. Extended Diploma

The main difference between these two qualification types is the number of units you’ll study. For the Diploma, you’ll receive an 18-month course duration, though its flexible structure means you can finish it at your own pace.

The Extended Diploma is the largest option, covering a wider range of topics and allowing for a deeper exploration of management and leadership. This version gives you up to 24 months to complete your studies, offering a broader learning experience for those looking to expand their expertise.
