The Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), the UK and Europe’s leading provider of leadership and coaching qualifications, is making a significant change that will benefit thousands of learners. As part of its ongoing commitment to recognising professional achievement, ILM is now offering free post-nominal letters to all learners who complete qualifications at Level 4 and above. With over 70,000 people choosing an ILM qualification each year, this enhancement adds even greater value to an already respected credential, helping learners showcase their expertise and stand out in a competitive job market.
Post-Nominal Updates
Many professional institutes offer post-nominal letters as part of their membership programmes, which typically require an application and assessment of your qualifications and experience. In most cases, completing a recognised qualification with the institute makes you eligible for a corresponding level of membership—an achievement that then entitles you to use post-nominals. However, gaining access to these benefits usually involves an additional cost, often in the form of an annual membership fee or a monthly subscription. While this is a common route for professionals seeking to boost their credibility, it can present a barrier for some learners, especially those just starting out in their careers.
However, ILM’s new post-nominal initiative takes a more accessible approach. Learners who complete ILM qualifications at Levels 4 to 7 will now automatically receive the right to use a designated set of post-nominal letters, at no extra cost. There are four post-nominal options available; the letters you receive are based on the qualification level you complete:
- LCGI – Licentiateship (Level 4)
- AfCGI – Affiliate (Level 5)
- GCGI – Graduateship (Level 6)
- MCGI – Membership (Level 7)
For example, if you have achieved an ILM level 5 qualification, you will use the post-nominal AfCGI to indicate Affiliateship level.
The CGI part of the post-nominal letters represents City & Guilds of London Institute, which is the awarding body behind ILM qualifications and a globally respected leader in skills development and vocational education.
Post-Nominal Eligibility
Post-nominals are available to learners who complete an ILM Level 4, 5, 6, or 7 qualification after April 2025. When you have achieved your qualification, you’ll receive your digital credentials directly from ILM via email.
Benefits of Post-Nominals
Post-nominal letters offer a range of benefits for your career progression. Because they appear directly after your name, they provide an instant, visible way to showcase your qualifications and level of expertise. This makes it easier for employers, colleagues, and clients to recognise your professional standing, whether on a CV, LinkedIn profile, or email signature.
While the immediate impact of completing a qualification can fade over time, post-nominal letters provide lasting value. They are a permanent mark of achievement and professional recognition – something you can proudly use after your name throughout your career. Whether on your CV, LinkedIn profile, or email signature, they’re a great way to reinforce your credibility.
If you’re exploring new career opportunities, having post-nominal letters after your name can help you stand out to potential employers. Not only do they show that you’ve developed valuable skills, but it also demonstrates your commitment to professional growth. This will make your application more memorable in a competitive field, which increases your chances of success.
