You may have been involved in organising a corporate event, or a family celebration, but can you imagine being part of the team to deliver such an awe inspiring occasion as the coronation?

Here we take a look at five of the key personnel involved in the coronation, and assess their skills and experience.

Commander Karen Findlay

The Metropolitan Policy will be coordinating Operation Golden Orb, the largest security operation of 2023 under the command of Karen Findlay, a seasoned and experienced police officer. From the close protection of visiting dignitaries, crowd control, deploying covert officers, sniper marksmen this role will call upon every ounce of her experience and highly regarded skills in the field of security.

Sir Clive Alderton KVCO

The King’s Principal Private Secretary for a number of years, having previously worked for the foreign office in France, Poland, Singapore and other overseas countries. Relied upon to provide advice and support the King in his duties as Head of State, effectively the channel of communication between the King and Government, Armed Forces and Church.  

Strengths:  Diplomatic experience, straight talking, loyalty, known for his social skills

Maj Johnny Thompson

An Equerry to the King, having previously served Queen Elizabeth II. His role encompasses organising, planning and executing the royal calendar of events and programmes.

Key Skills : Detail orientated, project management, and excellent communicator

Edward Fitzalan-Howard

As The Earl Marshal, a hereditary role held by the highest ranking Duke in England, he is responsible for the choreography of state ceremonies such as the opening of parliament, funerals and the coronation.  Known to be able to manage the extreme weight of responsibility he is required to demonstrate his expertise in protocols and planning.

The Most Revd Justin Welby

The Archbishop of Cantebury has a key role in the ceremony, the pinnacle of which will be to anoint and crown the King and Queen Consort.  Performing such a function under the scrutiny of the public highlights the calm and collected nature required for the role. Having made what’s seen as radical changes to the Church since his appointment, Revd Webly will not have any room to make changes to the coronation, parts of the ceremony date back over 1000 years!
