The Introduction to Spreadsheet Software is a Bite-size course aimed at introducing and developing new skills that can be used on a day-to-day basis whilst working within Microsoft Excel.  Created by industry experts, Spreadsheet knowledge is now mandatory in most line of jobs – not only limited to accountancy, so we are confident in our abilities to provide you with the necessary required at job level.  This course has been written to support you with expanding your understanding of:

  • The range of data entry, manipulation and outputting techniques will be multi-step and at times non routine or unfamiliar

  • The responsibility of setting up or developing the structure and functionality of the spreadsheet.

These skills are important to accounting organisations as they allow users to perform complex calculations quickly and efficiently. Most organisations use spreadsheets to manipulate large amounts of data on a daily basis.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of the Introduction to Spreadsheet Software you will have:

  • Knowledge and experience using a spreadsheet to enter, edit and organise numerical data
  • The ability to select and use appropriate formulas and data analysis tools
  • Be able to use tools and techniques to present and format spreadsheet information

Module Format

The first section of the Bitesize course covers the basics required to operate spreadsheets and includes exercises to introduce or refresh new skills.  The purpose is to ensure that the student is competent in setting up and manipulating a basic spreadsheet.

Section two describes ways of formatting data within a spreadsheet.  It explains different ways of representing numerical data including currencies and dates as well as more advanced techniques such as conditional formatting.  Once this section has been completed, the student should be able to produce clearly formatted, easy to read spreadsheets.

The third section covers the creation of formulas and shows how to make use of some of the built in calculation facilities provided by the spreadsheet software.  Once this section has been completed, the student should be able to produce spreadsheets which perform a variety of calculations.

Section four covers the tools which are regularly available within spreadsheet packages and shows how to move data between spreadsheets and other documents.  Once this section has been completed, the student should be able to organise a spreadsheet to include subtotals and be able to transfer information between spreadsheets and other software packages.

Section five covers the use of statistical formulas and charts.  Once this section has been completed, the student should be able to produce spreadsheets which perform a variety of statistical calculations and create appropriate charts to illustrate worksheet data.

The final section covers working with multiple worksheets and the use of the paste special function.

The bite-size course is an online interactive learning programme, broken down into informative topics to help you progress through the course in a user-friendly way. Throughout your learning, you can use the self-test questions to cement your understanding and can pause and resume your studies whenever it is convenient.
