Prepare to Succeed

Are you participating in this weekend’s London Marathon? Yes? We salute you.

A marathon of any length takes determination, preparation and sincere dedication for quite a long period in the run up to the event. Doing so ensures an optimum performance.

When our very own Distance Learning Tutor, Phil, signed up for the Edinburgh Marathon in May, it got the rest of the team here at DLC Training thinking. The preliminary planning that is involved in running a marathon can be compared to preparing for an exam.

Whilst most of our distance learning courses don’t consist of an exam element, there are some that do. For example, our AAT accountancy courses or the coveted MCIPS qualification.

Exams, whether in a classroom or the comfort of your own home, can be incredibly stressful. That’s why organisation is key. You’re more likely to do your best when you’re calm, prepared and practised. Similarly to running a marathon, if you’ve trained hard you’re less likely to obtain injury.

So, preparation! Firstly, let’s start with equipment. Have you got the right books, resources and study materials to pass the exam? A runner can’t do much without the right trainers.

Next, it’s good to create a revision schedule. And sticking to it is even better. Depending on how you prefer to study, you may want to break your revision time down into bitesize chunks and do mini sessions a couple of times a day. Perhaps you work better studying for a couple of hours in one go. That’s up to you, but make sure you cover all topics, rotating your study areas throughout your revision period. Don’t forget to conduct further research, or get in touch with your dedicated mentor if there’s anything you haven’t quite grasped.

Regular revision for a distance learning student is key to absorbing the information. Just like regular training for a marathon runner perfects their time and technique. Mix up your study methods, keep your brain active! Get in touch with our expert tutors, like Phil, who can provide you with examples of previous tests and mock exams for your online qualification.

So you’ve got your schedule and you’re studying hard. Great! But have you factored in rest days? Just like your body, your brain needs time to recuperate and digest all of the information from your revision. Pushing yourself too far and too often can tire you out, adding unnecessary pressure to an already stressful situation.

To reiterate, get prepared. Make sure you have all the tools you need and create a schedule that suits your study method whilst working around your current commitments. Make sure you get plenty of rest, drink plenty of water and be easy on yourself. Just keep focussed on the end goal. Imagine crossing that finish line or receiving that pass? It can be stressful, time consuming and difficult – but it’s always worth it.
